Bulldog Health Bulldog Health A well bred Bulldog should be healthy and be able to do as much as any other pedigree dog. Here at Brinsden Bulldogs we believe in health testing each and every dog before they are bred from. Our health testing programme includes x-raying for hip and elbow dysplasia, x-raying the shoulders and spine to ensure they are normal and having patella's checked and cleared from luxation. We also have the trachea x-rayed and measured. When purchasing a Bulldog puppy we recommend you ensure the breeder has a health testing programme in place and are able to provide proof of this. LIKE ANY OTHER DOG THE BULLDOG IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO SOME COMMON AILMENTS, A FEW OF WHICH ARE LISTED HERE: CHERRY EYE - This is the prolapse of a gland which protrudes from behind the third eyelid forming a red lump in the corner of the eye. ECTROPIAN - This is a condition in which the eyelid rolls outwards or drops away from the eye. ENTROPIAN - This is the reverse condition of Ectropian: the eyelid rolls in causing a constant irritation to the eye. SKIN CONDITIONS - Common skin conditions that can be found in Bulldogs are eczema, seborrhea and acne. NOTE: It is important to ensure that the sire and dam of your puppy are free of skin problems. LUXATING PATELLA - This is a condition where the patella tendon that runs over the knee cap moves to one side popping in and out. HYPOPLASTIC TRACHEA - This is the abnormal growth of the rings of cartilage that make up the trachea which results in a narrow airway causing breathing difficulties and if very severe possible death. ELONGATED SOFT PALATE - In a dog with a elongated soft palate, the palate overlaps the epiglottis partially obstructing the animals airway making it difficult for the animal to breathe freely.
